Spice and Gourmand
First up we are covering spice and gourmand scents, which are some of the most common fall candles on the market. Gourmand scents are reminiscent of edible things such as a pumpkin spiced latte or a vanilla cookie. They are often sweet but not always. Spice fragrances usually feature aromas like cinnamon, clove, or pepper as the dominant scent.
1. Malin + Goetz Dark Rum
Malin + Goetz created a blend of vegetable, soy, and beeswax to burn for 60 hours, each of which is filled with the rich, spicy scents inspired by bay rum. Top notes include bergamot, plum, and anise, with the warm scents of leather, vanilla, and rum lingering in the middle range. Bottom notes of patchouli, milk, and amber provide that spice foundation that gives this candle its dark spiciness.
2. Homesick Autumn Hayride
Homesick lived up to its name with this one. Top notes of fresh hay, amber, and clove, middle notes of nutmeg, birch, and maple bark, and base notes of tonka, patchouli, and oak moss swirl together to evoke memories of fall hayrides and pumpkin patches. With 80 hours of burn time, it’s nostalgia in a jar.
3. Anecdote Candles Basic Pumpkin & Cardamom
Anecdote set out to create the perfect cozy fall candle, and we must admit they got it just about perfect. Inspired by pumpkin spice lattes and cable-knit sweaters, they used notes of pumpkin (duh), cardamom, and clove along with a base of clove leaf and acorns. Valencia orange, cinnamon, and ginger brighten up the scent and add that extra hint of spice that makes this candle sing. Its burn time runs about 40-50 hours.
4. La Jolie Muse Pumpkin Cinnamon
Another spiced pumpkin contender, La Jolie Muse is coming on strong with Cinnamon Pumpkin. It sports a whopping 90 hours of burn time and a wood wick, which gives you a soft crackling sound that is reminiscent of fall bonfires. As for scents, it features ripe pumpkin, toasted cinnamon, and caramel. The addition of the sweet caramel takes it from pumpkin spice latte to fall cinnamon roll.
5. Aromatique Cinnamon Cider Cube
Elegant, yet comforting. Contemporary, yet classic. Aromatique hand pours all of its candles in Arkansas and we think it shows with their Cinnamon Cider Cube. They struck a beautiful balance of sweet and earthy, combining notes of apples, cinnamon, rose, cherry wood, tobacco, and pear with a hint of citrus.
6. Voluspa Spiced Pumpkin Latte
Spiced Pumpkin Latte from Voluspa is yet another take on the ever-popular PSL. A delicious blend of pumpkin, vanilla marshmallow, coconut milk, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves that burns for 50 hours. The marshmallow and coconut milk make this option a perfect fall candle choice for any that favor the sweeter end of the gourmand spectrum.
7. Sweet Water Decor Hello Fall
Hello Fall from Sweet Water Decor sports farmhouse inspired packaging for a rustic, yet clean look. The candle is a classic and welcoming fall scent, comprised mainly of apple, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Plus, it’s made in the U.S., and burns for about 50 hours!
Fall Fruits
This category is dedicated to candles that feature fruity scents in all their forms. Sweet and fresh or smoky and rich, fruit scents are incredibly versatile but are often overlooked. Some of these could be classified as spice or gourmand scents, but we felt these notes were secondary to the fruit element.
8. Calyan Wax Co. Apples + Maple Bourbon
Baked apples, brown sugar, maple syrup, and Kentucky bourbon come together in a warm, layered scent. Mandarin, tangerine, orange, and cinnamon leaf essential oils perk the candle up and balance out the sweetness offered by the brown sugar and maple syrup notes. Treat over 50 hours of fall apple goodness with Calyan Wax Co.’s Apples + Maple Bourbon fall candle this year!
9. La Jolie Muse Fresh Apple
Fresh, juicy apple and white flora dance in this bright blend from La Jolie Muse. Earthy amber grounds the fragrance and lends it a festive, nostalgic edge that is evocative of hot apple cider and apple picking. Despite its small size Fresh Apple boasts a 75 hour burn time, one of our longest yet.
10. Sweet Water Decor Cypress and Fig
Ripe fig meets tropical fruits, wild raspberry, eucalyptus, and Canadian cypress in this delightful blend from Sweet Water Decor. Tonka, musk, and clove add musky and rich elements, creating a refreshing yet comforting scent for 40 hours this fall.
11. Kindred Essence Cinnamon Orange
Cheerful, inviting, and delectable, Cinnamon Orange from Kindred Essence offers bright notes of orange and tangerine coupled with warm cinnamon to create an uplifting scent through fall into winter. 12. NEST New York Autumn Plum
Wild plum mingles with patchouli leaf, cinnamon, and cashmere wood in NEST New York’s moody Autumn Plum. Fruity, dark, and rich. It’s a grown up fall candle, elegant and warm. When its 60 hours of burn time are up, hang on to the decorative glass to hold pens or make up brushes.
13. La Jolie Muse Dark Berries & Bergamot
La Jolie Muse combines the lush scents of red berry, plum, cherry, orange, and grape and tops them with notes of vanilla, caramel, bergamot, and patchouli to create a cozy and juicy fragrance. The wood wick adds and additional layer of autumn vibes, the sound they make is just too perfect to resist. Even with 90 hours of burn time, it never feels like enough.
14. Paddywax Apothecary Persimmon Chestnut
Persimmon Chestnut comes to us from Paddywax’s Apothecary inspired collection and envelopes us with fall using a well-balanced combination of apple, pear, orange, cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg. It’s hand poured in Nashville, Tennessee and burns cleanly for 48 hours. Paddywax recommends placing the used jar in the freezer overnight for easy wax removal so you can reuse the jar.
Warm and Woody
If you don’t consider yourself a fall candle lover because spice, sweet, and fruity scents don’t do anything for you, you’re going to love this category. Warm, moody, rich, mysterious. These selections are less conventionally “fall” but still check all the boxes for us.
15. Boy Smells Cashmere Kush
Hand mixed and poured in Los Angeles, California, Cashmere Kush from Boy Smells delivers a warm, woodsy fragrance ideal for those that don’t care for sweet notes. Deep notes of cashmere woods, white amber, and vetiver join tart rhubarb, tulip, musk, hemp blossom, and geranium leaf for a seductive botanical blend and the ultimate cool girl fall candle. Cashmere Kush’s burn time is about 50 hours, enjoy them wisely.
16. Lulu Candles No. 22 Tobacco, Spice, & Vanilla
Tobacco, spice, and vanilla team up in Lulu Candles No. 22. The light smokiness of the tobacco pairs well with the subtle sweetness of vanilla, with the tobacco grounding the vanilla. Spice plays well with them to create a smooth, sensual fall scent. Hand poured and made in the U.S.A., No. 22 has about 45 hours of burn time.
17. Voluspa Baltic Amber
Voluspa strikes again with Baltic Amber, a heady blend of sandalwood, vanilla orchid, and amber resin. Musky, rich, and layered, this fragrance holds up well in the crisp air of fall. And at 18 ounces with 100 hours of burn time, hold up it will! The embossed glass jar is also a great fall decor addition when your candle (finally) burns out.
18. Diptyque Noisetier
Far, far away from the traditional fall Pumpkin Land lives Noisetier by Diptyque. Noisetier means “hazel tree” in French, and it suits the candle well. Woody, luxurious, and fresh, it brings to mind the leaves and tree trunks of an idyllic forest. A subtly sweet note of hazelnuts drifts through the fragrance, just enough to add an air of coziness to the candle. While not overtly “fall”, there’s something autumnal to this woodsy and fresh scent.
19. Harlem Candle Company Speakeasy
Harlem Candle Co. seeks to replicate the dark mystique of nighttime and speakeasy clubs with Speakeasy. Though it adds a forbidden luxury feel to any time of year, we feel the notes of palo santo, patchouli, smoked incense, tobacco, and vanilla speak to the dark charm of fall. Pine, mint, lemon, cardamom, pimento berry, saffron, licorice, and dark chocolate interweave to fold you into an intoxicating cloud of this complex and sensual scent for 80 hours of burn time.
20. Mason Louis Marie No.04 Bois de Balincourt
Mason Louis Marie creates an ode to the forest with No. 04 Bois de Balincourt. Its woodsy aroma is derived from cedarwood and sandalwood, cinnamon and nutmeg layer beautifully with it to bring a warmth to the scent. Vetiver drifts throughout, an earthy and herbal scent that brings the scent together into a velvety, romantic, and mysterious fall candle choice.
21. Boy Smells Hinoki Fantôme
Another candle from Boy Smells rounds out our list. Smoking Japanese cypress, jasmine petals, fresh moss, and spice come together to create Hinoki Fantôme. Inspired by the relaxing aroma of Japanese cedar (aka Hinoki), this luxurious candle strikes the perfect balance of earthiness, wood, and jasmine we think is perfect as a fall candle. The subtle spice and cedarwood lends an autumnal vibe, but with 50 hours of burn time, you’ll have time to burn it any time of year.
